Attempted reeks walk
Saturday 28th August 2010
OK so we set off from Kate Kearneys at around 10.00 to atempt to do the ridge walk (see plan on previous post). It was a good start and we made it up to top of in about 2 hours
This was Finbar's 1st hill walk, we made it top of at Cruach Mhór 932 metres (3058 feet) and on approach to the Big Gun a decision was made to call it a day, if we carried on there were no easy escape routes so we decided to cut down by Loch Coimín Piast.
Paddy and Des headed on to cross the Big Gun and on over the Reeks to Carrantouhil. they bailed out at the top of Devils ladder and headed back for Cronin's yard.
Videos on the way
This is the route that Paddy and Des finished up doing
All in all a great day out, great weather and great company. We will leave the full Ridge Walk for another day, plan is to try it in smaller chunks 1st. To be honest I was a bit fearful of the big gun and all the warnings in the guide books about head for heights. I have to agree its not to be underestimated and you certainly need good weather to find your way. However its not impossible and at least now I feel like I could do it. Guide books all say to drop down to right (to avoid top of the Big Gun, especially if there is wind) but there really is no clear path so plan is to attempt this again

MacGillycuddy's Reeks Ridge
We (Paddy, I, Finbarr and 1 other) are going to have a go at this tomorrow Saturday, forecast is good, its said to be the finest ridge walk in Ireland and not for those of a nervous disposition!
Here is google Map
I'm going to include the suggested / planned route here and I'll post the actual when we get back + of course the photos.

Brandon Ridge via the lakes
Great walk last Friday, although views were poor due to low cloud cover.
Walk is located on Dingle Pensula on west coast of Ireland
Some Photos here, day was fairly cloudy as you can see!
Heres how to find it
This walk takes you up through the lakes at the foot of Brandon Peak, last time I walked up here we went around the left hand side of Lough Cruite and up the left hand side of waterfall, today however the river was in flood and i didn't fancy getting my feet wet at the start of the walk !
Here is a short preview of walk generated using Geolives PC editor
Here is a GPX file if you wan to load onto a Garmin GPS
