Gearhane (via Derrymore)
I've been meaning to do this walk for a long time. Everytime I drive in and out of Tralee I always glance up at the glen from Derrymore. I was originally heading for Baurtregaum but decided on a change of route as I'd never been on Gearhane before.
A few pics along the way. looks like a great place for a camp out some time!

Stradbally Beenoskee
Close to Castlegregory village are the two mountains Stradbally and Beenoskee.
Great walk yesterday. If you look at map belo walk starts at the Car park at bottom of woods (just opposite main road exit from castlegregory to stradbally village). 1st part of walk is up the forestry road to a base station, road ends here so you have to make your own way up the mountain as there is no clear path.

OS Map - Brandon Mountain (1:25,000)
OS Map 70 (1:50,000)
OS Map 71 (1:50,000) - This isn't really required but does contain some of the forest track at start, if you plan to
Extract below taken from Geolives editor
Here is the route taken (GPS tracking didn't start till the base station)
Video taken above Glenteenassig from ridge on way to Stradbally
As you can see this is a real nice walk once you get up on high ground
Pictures taken on the way
Notes
On way down I talk a steeper route, as you can see in the route video above.
Also climbed this mountain from Glenteenassig back in March
There is another suggested route here, must ry in future

Attempted reeks walk
Saturday 28th August 2010
OK so we set off from Kate Kearneys at around 10.00 to atempt to do the ridge walk (see plan on previous post). It was a good start and we made it up to top of in about 2 hours
This was Finbar's 1st hill walk, we made it top of at Cruach Mhór 932 metres (3058 feet) and on approach to the Big Gun a decision was made to call it a day, if we carried on there were no easy escape routes so we decided to cut down by Loch Coimín Piast.
Paddy and Des headed on to cross the Big Gun and on over the Reeks to Carrantouhil. they bailed out at the top of Devils ladder and headed back for Cronin's yard.
Videos on the way
This is the route that Paddy and Des finished up doing
All in all a great day out, great weather and great company. We will leave the full Ridge Walk for another day, plan is to try it in smaller chunks 1st. To be honest I was a bit fearful of the big gun and all the warnings in the guide books about head for heights. I have to agree its not to be underestimated and you certainly need good weather to find your way. However its not impossible and at least now I feel like I could do it. Guide books all say to drop down to right (to avoid top of the Big Gun, especially if there is wind) but there really is no clear path so plan is to attempt this again

We (Paddy, I, Finbarr and 1 other) are going to have a go at this tomorrow Saturday, forecast is good, its said to be the finest ridge walk in Ireland and not for those of a nervous disposition!
Here is google Map
I'm going to include the suggested / planned route here and I'll post the actual when we get back + of course the photos.

Brandon Ridge via the lakes
Great walk last Friday, although views were poor due to low cloud cover.
Walk is located on Dingle Pensula on west coast of Ireland
Some Photos here, day was fairly cloudy as you can see!
Heres how to find it
This walk takes you up through the lakes at the foot of Brandon Peak, last time I walked up here we went around the left hand side of Lough Cruite and up the left hand side of waterfall, today however the river was in flood and i didn't fancy getting my feet wet at the start of the walk !
Here is a short preview of walk generated using Geolives PC editor
Here is a GPX file if you wan to load onto a Garmin GPS
More pics below

Hike to Mas an Tiompan
If you look at the mountains near Brandon in Dingle, Mas An Tiompain is the 1st large mountain you see if you look from right to left starting at Brandon Point. Its a lovely walk which goes along much of the Dingle Way but then you veer off the track to the right and up the steep slope of Mas, see video below of trail.
The views fron the top of west of Dingle, Blaskets, Seven sisters are excellent as are views of Sauce Creek. After a spot of lunch on Mas I suggest you don't miss Piara Mor, which is an easy scramble but feels like you are on top of everything. Possibly a bit dodgy in windy conditions.
The walk below took about 4-5 hours, it was a nice day and there was no rush to get anywhere. You could also consider starting at Brandon Point and walking along the top of Sauce creek, maybe another day soon.
The weather for this trip was fantastic as you can see from the photos and still some snow remaining on top after our recent cold spell.
Trail/Map
The following map illustrates the Trail in Google Maps, use Terrain, Stalite button to change view. If you are looking for a starting point follow directions to Cloghane on R560 (From Tralee/Camp), once you get through th village keep an eye out for road to the left, signs for Teer Gallery and also the Mas as Tiompain walking trail. Just ask Locals if you get lost.
View from Piaras Mor
This Video was taken from Piaras Mor which is a small little peak between Mas and the start of the Brandon ridge. Its a short scramble to the top and the views and feeeling of beiong above everything are great.
Geolives Trail
I use Geolives which utilises OSI maps for creating and reviewing walks and trails. There is a nice facility in it which allows you to view the trails in 3D and create a video. To get best benefit you really need to see it on a full screen, but i'd certainly recommend the product. In the map below there are some other trails which I have been on, I will publish more on these later.

Walking on the Beech
It was such a nice day the other day, myself and Carol went for a walk on the beech. The tide was a long way out due to full Moon previous night, you don't often see these rocks. Pictures and Video were taken with the phone. Incredible reflections in the water.
